Britney Spears' ex-husband and baby daddy Kevin Federline is going public with questions about the popstar's mental health in newly-published excerpts from his upcoming memoir You Thought You Knew, out October 21.
Federline, who we once knew as K-Fed, broke up his first marriage to wed the popstar at the height of her fame, with the two later divorcing after three years of marriage in 2007. In his new book, the 47-year-old former dancer gives his perspective on their marriage and writes about Britney's use of drugs and alcohol, along with angry outbursts during the later parts of their marriage.
In one chapter, according to The New York Times, Federline writes that their sons — Sean Preston and Jayden James, now 20 and 19, respectively — once said they did not want to go back to their mother's house out of fear and other reasons.
"They would awaken sometimes at night to find her standing silently in the doorway, watching them sleep — 'Oh, you’re awake?' — with a knife in her hand," he writes. "Then she’d turn around and pad off without explanation."
Despite not talking to Britney for years, K-Fed writes that he's become increasingly concerned about her "erratic behavior," which he learned second hand from their two sons.
"The truth is, this situation with Britney feels like it’s racing toward something irreversible," he writes.
"It’s become impossible to pretend everything’s OK," he adds. "From where I sit, the clock is ticking, and we’re getting close to the 11th hour. Something bad is going to happen if things don’t change, and my biggest fear is that our sons will be left holding the pieces."
Shortly after the book announcement hit the news wire, Britney's rep issued a statement to Billboard denouncing the memoir as a cash grab.
“With news from Kevin’s book breaking, once again he and others are profiting off [Britney]. Sadly it comes after child support has ended with Kevin. All she cares about are her kids, Sean Preston and Jayden James and their well-being during this sensationalism. She detailed her journey in her memoir [The Woman in Me].”
Federline also writes about the "Free Britney" movement, which he writes "may have started from a good place," but it denigrated people in Britney's camp to the point where professionals that could help are now hesitant to step in.
"All those people who put so much effort into that," he writes, "should now put the same energy into the ‘Save Britney’ movement. Because this is no longer about freedom. It’s about survival."
Since news broke regarding Federline's memoir, Britney took to Instagram in a cryptic new post regarding her family. See below:
