Bon Iver devotees will already know "SPEYSIDE", as the band's Justin Vernon has been occasionally dropping the song into live sets since debuting it three years ago at a tiny show in his hometown of Eau Claire, WI. But for those just finding out about it now, make space for a new heartbreaker in your life.
Speyside is an area of Scotland famed for its many whiskey distilleries, and there's more than a touch of booze-soaked regret attached to the song. Stripped back to just Vernon's voice and acoustic guitar, with viola by bandmate Rob Moose, "SPEYSIDE" is the first new music solely attributed to Bon Iver since 2020's "AUATC". A boxset of Vernon's early, pre-Bon Iver recordings was released last August.
According to a press release that's light on details, Vernon co-produced "SPEYSIDE" with Jim E-Stack, whose 2020 album EPHEMERA included a guest appearance from Vernon on the song "Jeanie". A music video for "SPEYSIDE" will also drop on Friday, directed by visual artist and fellow Wisconsinite Erinn Springer.
Today's announcement follows a series of teasers posted to Vernon's Instagram. Responding to the comments on the latest teaser, shared yesterday, Vernon's label Jagjaguwar joked: "y’all need jesus (& patience)"
