Bob Mould's trio Sugar reunite and release first new song in 31 years

Many alternative rock pioneers from the '80s scored actual hits in the '90s, from the unlikely (Butthole Surfers, the Flaming Lips) to the just-a-matter-of-time (Kim Deal's lopsided, sweet and sour riffers with the Breeders after being gradually pushed out of Pixies).

After Hüsker Dü spent the previous decade turning hardcore into catchy anthems and paving the way for anyone you can think of — Nirvana, Turnstile, Militarie Gun — singer/guitarist Bob Mould formed a new power trio, Sugar, who retained the volume but made considerably poppier music for two full-lengths and one heavily shoegaze-influenced EP. Some tunes (especially "If I Can't Change Your Mind," which fucking Train covered) scored airplay in an alt-friendlier world. Then they were broken up by 1995.

After teasing something last week on the band's socials, Sugar has confirmed they are reuniting, with a new single out today, aptly titled "House of Dead Memories", and four NYC and UK shows announced for 2026, their first doings of anything in over 30 years. "House of Dead Memories" retains Mould's signature fuzzy jangle and admittedly sounds like they barely left. You can listen to it and see those tour dates below. And play Copper Blue and File Under: Easy Listening if you never have.
