Blondshell explores the complexity of mother/daughter relationships on new single "What's Fair"

Blondshell's Sabrina Teitelbaum offers a first look at where she might be headed with her yet-to-be-announced second album with new single "What's Fair".

Co-written with Olivia Rodrigo collaborator Casey Smith and Teitelbaum's Blondshell bandmate and producer Yves Rothman, the '90s alternative rock throwback has already been thoroughly road-tested, appearing in Blondshell's recent live sets.

In an accompanying press release, Teitelbaum explains that the inspiration for "What's Fair" lies in the "inherently complicated" relationships between mothers and daughters. Expanding on that, she says:

Maybe it’s because of my own relationship, which was grounded in a lot of trauma and loss, but I think it’s always confusing. What are you allowed to expect, what is normal, what behavior from a parent is okay or not okay etc? And to what extent does ‘normal’ even matter when your experience is all you have. I was just trying to sift through the past when I wrote this song and I mostly had a lot of questions.”

Blondshell has had a busy 2024 already. Besides touring extensively she's contributed to the A24 tribute to Talking Heads' Stop Making Sense and shared the Bully-featuring live track "Docket".

While there's no confirmation yet that "What's Fair" will definitely appear on the upcoming Blondshell record, it tallies with her aim to dig into deeper subjects second time around. In an interview with The Forty-Five last October, Teitelbaum revealed that she was about to enter the studio to demo the songs she'd written album #2, saying: "I can’t tell you much about it now other than on the first record, I wrote about a lot of different subjects through talking about dating and now I’m just trying to talk about those subjects directly.”

Teitelbaum and her bandmates are currently on the road, supporting Glass Animals on their US tour, and have other shows and festivals planned into October:
