Big Thief's James Krivchenia announces new album 'Performing Belief', shares the glitchy "Probably Wizards"

Admist his stint as drummer/producer for the venerable Big Thief, James Krivchenia also makes cartoonish, collage-like electronic music that cherrypicks from a rather dazzling range of sources.

Krivchenia has announced new album Performing Belief – out May 22 via Planet Mu – the follow-up to 2022's Blood Karaoke, and has shared a new track called "Probably Wizards". It's a jittery electronic jam that features prolific instrumentalists Sam Wilkes and Joshua Abrams adding some physicality with bass and percussion. There's some brief flirtations with Euro-house and Italo-disco before helixing back into its erratic groove.

Listen below:

Performing Belief adds fresh instrumentation and hardware – like synths and drum machine – which is quite a notable progression from Blood Karaoke, a record that was exclusively a patchwork of sound snippets and field recordings Krivchenia had ripped from YouTube videos.

Krivchenia still messes around with field recordings, but instead of scanning the world wide web, he performed many of his own found sounds on Performing Belief: "[A] particularly resonant log on a hike, throwing rocks into a pristine pond, tap dancing in the mud," to quote the press release.

In addition, Krivchenia will play his very first show as a solo artist on June 17 at Elsewhere in Brooklyn, NY. Tickets can be purchased here.
