On Sunday night (2 February), Beyoncé won the Grammy for Album Of The Year for Cowboy Carter at the 67th annual awards. Despite having been nominated 5 previous times for the same prize, and being the most nominated artist in Grammy history – accumulating 99 nominations – this is the first time she has won the top category of the annual ceremony.
The “TEXAS HOLD ‘EM” singer took the time to “thank and acknowledge and praise all the firefighters for keeping us safe” at the beginning of her speech. “I just feel very full and very honored. It’s been many, many years,” she continued, “I just want to thank the Grammys, every songwriter, every collaborator, every producer, all of the hard work. I want to dedicate this to Miss Martel, and I hope we just keep moving forward, opening doors. God Bless y’all, thank you so much, thank you,” she concluded.
She was competing against household names such as Taylor Swift, Charli XCX, and Billie Eilish; recent stars including Sabrina Carpenter and Chappell Roan – who won Best New Artist and gave a speech demanding healthcare for artists – as well as Jacob Collier and André 3000.
Earlier in the ceremony, Queen Bey was astonished and honored to have won Best Country Album. “Wow, I want to thank God that I’m able to still do what I love after so many years. Oh my God,” she said, “I’d like to thank all of the incredible country artists that accepted this album, we worked so hard on it, I think sometimes genre is a cold word to keep us in our place as artists and I just want to encourage people to do what they’re passionate about.”
During the pre-ceremony, she took home Best Country Duo/Group Performance award for “II MOST WANTED”, featuring Miley Cyrus. She had also been nominated for Record Of The year and Song Of The Year, which both went for Kendrick Lamar’s diss track “Not Like Us”.
