Electronic producer/multi-instrumentalist/songer-songwriter Will Wiesenfeld has announced his first new record under his Baths alias in seven years.
Gut is out February 21 via his own Basement's Basement label, and was self-produced by Wiesenfeld. The announcement comes with the first single and video, "Sea of Men", directed by Wiesenfeld. Watch below:
His fourth album as Baths finds Wiesenfeld exploring themes of sex, sexuality, lust, relationships, and self-doubt, with the artist saying he's writing "from the stomach" on this LP. He goes on to say:
"I think about men, and sex, quite literally all the time. To make a new album that felt like an actual honest effort meant exploring this fact further than I've ever been comfortable with, with no regard to personal embarrassment or relatability ... I’m sketching my strongest and most pervasive feelings out quickly and treating their roughness as gospel, then exploring them in greater detail with the added sheen of time and perspective. I ended up not just writing about sex but also about personal shortcomings, dreamless living, harmful fantasies, and dissonant self-identities...things I also think about all the time."
The album has a more "full band" sound than most of Baths' prior work, with Wiesenfeld putting his guitar playing more upfront than usual. (Although he does often use guitar with his other project, Geotic.) The album additionally features some live drumming by Casey Deitz and Sam Kaufman-Skloff, along with strings from the Isaura String Quartet.
Since his last album of Baths (2017's Romaplasm) Wiesenfeld has kept busy. Beyond releasing five albums under his Geotic name, he also released his score to the animated series Bee and PuppyCat. Most recently, he composed the scores for documentary Queer Japan (credited under Geotic) and Big Boys, the narrative feature from Corey Sherman.
