Bananagun are back with their first new album (and single) in four years

Australian psych-rock band Bananagun are back with a brand new album, Why is the Colour of the Sky?

Their debut album The True Story of Bananagun released during the height of the pandemic and made rehearsing and touring nearly impossible due to Australia's strict lockdown rules. After a tumultuous four years, the band is back with new music.

The album is produced by Tim Dunn, who has previously worked with other Australian artists such as Kirin J Callinan and Orb. The album was recorded at Button Pusher studio Preston, Melbourne. It was recorded mostly live, "warts n' all" with few retakes and some overdubbing, "the most organic way to record."

The first single off the album is the trippy and frenetic, "Free Energy". Drummer Jimi Gregg had this to say about the new single,

"It’s about the transient energy all around us and within us, exchanging between us, and the infinite possibilities depending on where you choose to place your energy. It’s like a force bigger than us that we can harness and transmute into cool things like a sculpture, a song, or even a roast dinner. It's the 'force' Yoda talks about.

You can check out the music video for "Free Energy" below.

Nick van Bakel, the band's vocalist/guitarist/flautist, had this to say about the record,

"[Why is the Colour…] is all just about not losing your head and being over stimulated by the ‘goggle box’; the need for spirituality and nature; the need to be able to communicate and share ideas and adapt in a rapidly changing world without being judged and profiled. The preservation of human needs, so we don't all get homogenised and isolated and poisoned to stupidity and obedience."

Why is the Colour of the Sky is set to release on November 8th via Full Time Hobby. You can pre-order it on CD, vinyl, and digital here.
