Sad news to report after Mexico City's two-day music festival AXE Ceremonia was effectively canceled Sunday due to a crane collapse killing two photographers the night before.
"With profound sadness, we confirm the death of the two individuals who were injured in the incident that occurred [Saturday]," the statement, translated from Spanish, reads. "This loss hurts us immensely."
Several artists were still slated to perform at the festival, including Tyler, The Creator; Massive Attack; Lil Yachty; and The Marías, among others, when a decorative structure being moved by a crane collapsed during Meme Del Real's performance on the festival's opening night.
Mexican music outlet Mr. Indie confirmed the victims as photographers Berenice Giles and Miguel Hernández, USA Today reports.
"From our space, we want to honor their devotion, their love for music and photography, and their commitment to this project that was also theirs," Mr. Indie said.
AXE Ceremonia also put out a statement, saying the organization had been in contact with the deceased's families to "accompany them in this very difficult moment and offer them all our support and solidarity."
"The safety of our community has always been our priority and we maintain, as from the first moment, a close collaboration and total openness with authorities," the festival stated.
The festival said in a separate statement that tickets for Sunday's show would be automatically refunded via Ticketmaster.
