Austra turns the Orpheus myth on its head with new single "Siren Song"

Katie Stelmanis follows up recent single "Math Equation" with a second taste of the upcoming fifth Austra album, Chin Up Buttercup, out November 14 via Domino Records.

The Vanessa Magic-directed video stars Stelmanis' "emotional demon alter-ego" Buttercup as the titular siren, Frank Griggs as Orpheus, and Maizy the dog as herself. Watch it below:

"'Siren Song' exists somewhere at the intersection of ABBA, Ray of Light, The X-Files, and Greek mythology,” says Stelmanis, adding:

“ABBA inspired the early songwriting with Patrick. The Siren introduced herself to me while I was improvising the demo recordings and I quickly realized that Orpheus would be our common nemesis. Following a recent X-Files binge, I was heavily inspired by Mulder’s desperate search for his sister. Ray of Light came in at the end as my co-producer Kieran Adams and I were establishing the sonic realm which would become the backdrop for our Siren to lament the loss of her lover to Orpheus and his pesky Lyre.”

Along with the single comes news of the first major run of Austra shows in 8 years. The Chin Up Buttercup tour kicks off in Ottawa in early January and runs through to the end of March. Tickets go on general sale from Thursday (October 9). Full list of dates below:
