Asher White has dropped a surprise total remake of Jessica Pratt's 2012 self-titled debut today, reimagining each of the songs in her own idiosyncratic way.
What started out in 2023 as a project born out of procrastination has now become, by way of "a manic state of self-imposed frenzy," a fully-realized record that comes with Pratt's own seal of approval. "White’s curiously inventive renditions took me by surprise," she says in a press release. "A broad sweep stylistically and production-wise. Not just homage but a record in its own right."
As White tells it, during a dinner with label Joyful Noise last year, she made an off-hand boast about having these covers "locked and loaded, totally ready to go," which "of course was a lie but the delusion of being a worthy client was intoxicating."
"They reacted with surprise and told me I should send them the album ASAP," she says, triggering a month or so of frantically revisiting the project to "arrange, record, and mix the bulk of the album."
"While I’m sure the label initially suspected some misrepresentation or hyperbole on my end, they are only learning the extent of my embarrassing, needlessly stressful farce upon me submitting this very text to them," White reveals.
