Something strange and cool is happening on YouTube.
Apparently, Aphex Twin has amassed more monthly listeners on the platform than Taylor Swift.
This was discovered by DJ RamonPang, who made an Instagram post about it last Thursday. According to the stats in YouTube Music, Aphex Twin's audience amounts to 438 million monthly listeners, while Swift's is 396 million. Just as a means of comparison, on Spotify, the producer has 3 million monthly listeners. Swift has 112 million.
Pang atributes this to the popularity of Aphex Twin's track "QKThr", taken from his 2001 Drukqs record, which has gone viral last year and soundtracks lots of YouTube shorts – from meme compilations to short essays on technology. Thanks to YouTube's particular reporting, the views coming from those also count in the monthly listeners number.
In his analysis, Pang wonders if "QKThr" unleashes feelings of nostalgia for Gen Alpha and Gen Z, even though most of them hadn't even been born when Drukqs was released. We can all agree, though, that the track is a vibe.
