Musician Anna Calvi returns today with a brand new single. Collaborating with Perfume Genius, Calvi has released a new cover of Bonnie "Prince" Billy's immortal 1999 classic, "I See a Darkness".
It comes with a video directed by Alexander Brown. Watch/listen below:
“So many songs are about romantic love,” Calvi explains, going further:
“But I wanted to highlight the romance of the chosen family, the depth of connection that isn’t tethered to heteronormative ideals. It's such a powerful song about the yearning for intimacy. I love inhabiting other people's songs. When I sing someone else's words, I feel like I'm getting closer to myself somehow, because the songs I choose express something I can't articulate.”
This cover marks Calvi's first release since scoring the BBC series Peaky Blinders, which concluded in 2022. She has also recently launched a Substack.
Calvi has also announced "an intimate headline show" at London’s EartH Theatre where she will perform rarities from her back catalog, and play alongside some "special guests." The show is sold out.

Bonnie "Prince" Billy – aka Will Oldham – released the album I See a Darkness in 1999, and its title track has been covered many times ever since, including by Rosalia on her 2017 album Los Angeles and Johnny Cash on his 2000 LP America III: Solitary Man (which Oldham duetted with him on).
