Amy Millan – the singer-songwriter best known for her co-frontperson duties, alongside Torquil Campbell, in indie/chamber-rock band Stars – is gearing up to release her latest solo LP. The Canadian artist's third solo outing, I Went to Find You, is out May 30 via Last Gang Records.
Millan has also shared the first single "Wire walks", which comes with a video produced by AOK and made by Luca Tarantini and Jonah Armitage. Listen/watch below:
I Went to Find You is Millan's first solo album in nearly 16 years – her last, Masters of the Burial, came out in September 2009. Her main gig, Stars, has released five albums since then, most recently with 2022's From Capelton Hill. Millan is also a longtime member of Canadian supergroup Broken Social Scene.
Of the first single, Millan had this to say:
"Getting older is a trip. You assume you’re gonna grow out of feeling like you might fall down a hole any minute, but for me the feeling continues to hover ... I reference Stars’ ‘Ageless Beauty’ here with the lyric ‘I lied when I said that time would catch your head.’ I thought when I was younger time would mend all wounds, but I was wrong, it does not. Turns out they stick around! So what I have learned with my sage years is to stop trying to dodge and outrun the hard feelings. Embrace the difficult bits, the footprint that made me what I am. When outrunning isn’t working, I might need to lean into what I’ve always been."
The album was co-written and produced with Jay McCarrol, and engineered by Jace Lasek of The Besnard Lakes. Millan hopes these are "gentle songs for difficult times," saying she wanted to "make a record for your nervous system."
She goes on about the candid nature of the lyrics:
"When I look back at all the songs I’ve ever written, there’s a lot of moments where I’m expressing sadness about a lost love when really there’s a much greater loss at the core. This record felt like the first time I was able to address that loss without clouding it all in lyrics about boys and whiskey."
