Amanda Bynes announces comeback single following three-year hiatus

Amanda Bynes is set to release her new single "Girlfriend" on Friday April 10, marking her first music release in three years. The track follows her 2022 single "Diamonds".

Speaking to E!, Bynes said: “My inspiration was a lot of EDM, as well as rap.” The song reflects that mix of styles, combining electronic elements with hip-hop influences.

Her label, Create Music Group, described the track in a statement: “’Girlfriend’ blends melodic rap with EDM-inspired production, creating a catchy, high-replay record with a smooth West Coast bounce.”

They added: “Built around a strong hook and confident, flirt-heavy energy, it’s designed for repeat listens and wide playlist appeal. Featuring Fenix Flexin, it taps into a familiar L.A. sound while staying fresh and accessible.”

Bynes first rose to prominence in the 1990s on Nickelodeon, appearing on All That and later starring in The Amanda Show. She transitioned to film in the 2000s, with roles in What a Girl Wants, She’s the Man and Hairspray. Her last acting role was in Easy A.

Her career slowed in the 2010s due to mental health and substance abuse issues, leading to a conservatorship in 2013. She ended the conservatorship in 2022, stating: “In the last several years, I have been working hard to improve my health so that I can live and work independently, and I will continue to prioritise my well-being in this next chapter.”

Her situation has drawn comparisons to Britney Spears, whose conservatorship lasted from 2008 to 2021.

More recently, Bynes was arrested on March 4 in California for suspected “driving under the influence of a combination of drugs and alcohol,” according to TMZ. She later addressed the incident on Instagram, writing: “Thank you guys for all your support… spending time with family and friends is such a blessing. Stay kind !!!”
