Underoath’s Aaron Gillespie and Tim McTague, members of the influential Florida-based metalcore band known for blending heavy post-hardcore, were recent guests on the new Still Being Cool podcast, hosted by comedians Davey Jackson, Mat Edgar, and Neil Rubenstein. The conversation covered a wide range of topics: C-sections, happy ending massage parlors, growing up Christian, and at one point, the group dove into a discussion about cancel culture and the grooming allegations against Brand New frontman Jesse Lacey.
Brand New, a Long Island emo and alternative rock band that rose to prominence in the 2000s, has been largely inactive since Lacey was accused of sexual misconduct in 2017, but is back on the road this year for a reunion tour.
Gillespie brought up a story about a friend of his “big in the scene” who recently attended a Brand New show, only to be met with people around him saying “fuck you motherfucker” for going. That led to a broader debate about whether it’s possible to separate the art from the artist.
Rubenstein joked about Bill Cosby before Gillespie outright asked, “Do you still like Brand New?” Rubenstein replied with conflicted feelings, saying: “Fuck that band,” but admitted he still liked the music, even if he no longer listens to it, and noted the band employs many of his friends: “100% go see them because like ‘Joe’ needs a job.” He added, “I don’t like Jesse,” and clarified, “It’s not because he was canceled. I was already out on him.”
McTague shifted the conversation toward the concept of forgiveness, saying he’d heard Lacey had gone to rehab and therapy and is now in a different stage of life, married with a family. The most surprising moment came when Gillespie revealed that a friend of Lacey’s allegedly told him (describing it as hearsay or “bar talk”) that Lacey plans to release a solo album soon. According to this friend, the idea is that everyone will “shit all over” the solo record, allowing Lacey to issue an apology and take the heat, after which Brand New will release a new album and, supposedly, be a welcome back album: “Really strange. I don’t know how much of that is hyperbole,” Gillespie said.
McTague says he personally loves Brand New, and if they came to his town, he would go and see them without feeling guilty, and he’d post about it.
