Ahead of new album, LUCY drops second single "Rhododendron"

Cade Cod artist Cooper B. Handy, aka LUCY, released a new song called "Rhododendron". It previews upcoming album Cooper B. Handy's Album, Vol. 9, which arrives on December 6th.

The track samples an all too familiar flute motif, laced into its deliciously thrify beat. In the video, Handy sports a green Cape Cod hockey jersey, frolicking around the docks. Some might say the nautical theme of "Rhododendron" is a tad on-the-nose, but in the warped pop universe of LUCY, earnestness tends to feel novel and wholly uplifting (despite the song itself alluding to seasonal depression).

Watch the video for "Rhododendron", directed by Guy Kozak, below.

LUCY on Rhododendron:

“Rhododendron” is a song written in the winter. It holds messages of how things can change and freeze over time. Emotional changes that can come along with the seasons. A song that asks “are we holding on to let go?”

"Rhododendron" follows "2nd Wind", the first single from Cooper B. Handy's Album, Vol. 9. According to Handy, "a track that came from an eerie piano riff I wrote in 2021. The song talks about a second wind being in the air for better or for worse. The chorus sings “you can’t afford it, you can’t avoid it”. The lyrics and melody of the song seem to share the same mysterious energy.”

Handy was his usual industrious self this year, having just wrapped up a Fall tour across Europe. He also started a new project called Safe Mind alongside Boy Harsher's Augustus Muller.

LUCY – an acronym for Love Unity Communication Yes? – has been Handy's main vehicle since 2009. He gained notoriety as part of rap collective Dark World, while also performing in punk band Taxidermists and experimental pop outfit Club Casualties. In addition, Handy has collaborated in the past with Lily Konigsberg, Evilgiane and the aforementioned Boy Harsher.
