Floating Points – the project of techno-cosmonaut Sam Shepherd – has a new album coming up via Ninja Tune, titled Cascade. It will be released on September 13, and today, Shepherd has unveiled a second new track, "Ocotillo".
Like with the previously revealed track "Key103", Shepherd has worked closely with Japanese artist Akiko Nakayama; "Ocotillo" forms an audiovisual symbiosis with one of Nakayama's vibrant Alive Paintings. Watch it below:
"Ocotillo" starts like a primordial soup of soothing ambient sounds, percolating under Miriam Adefris's soothing harp melodies and an old clavichord Shepherd inherited from his great aunt. Slowly but surely, an organism grows out of this fertile pool of sound, shaping into a cavernous, cosmic techno pulse.
Nakayama has also made the cover art for "Ocotillo", which you can view below.
Cascade is one of many projects currently orbiting Shepherd. He has been preoccupied writing Mere Mortals, his first score for the San Francisco Ballet, a project in which Adefris has also collaborated. AOver the past few years, Floating Points has courted sublime brain-bursting audiovisual spendor, yet Shepherd always manages to keep one leg anchored inside of the clubs. Last month, Floating Points made his belated Boiler Room debut.
