Los Angeles post-black metal band Agriculture have announced their second full-length album, The Spiritual Sound, due for release October 3rd via The Flenser.
Alongside that, they've also dropped a music video for the single "Bodhidharma," which you can watch below:
The band describes The Spiritual Sound as melding two different visions from primary songwriters Dan Meyer and Leah Levinson. The former draws from his interest in Zen Buddhism and historical collapse, alongside what he describes as "ecstatic grief," while the latter pulls from queer history and writers active during the AIDS era.
The track "Bodhidharma" is chiefly Meyer's work, conceptually speaking. He says:
"Bodhidharma, the founder of Zen Buddhism, was an Indian monk who famously stared at the wall of a cave for nine years. He even cut off his eyelids in order to prevent himself from falling asleep. At one time, another monk (named Huike) approached him in his cave and pleaded ‘master, my head is on fire with anxiety, can you pacify my mind?’ Bodhidharma just kept staring at the wall and Huike waited outside of the cave all night until he was buried in snow up to his waist. Finally, as a gesture of desperation he cut off his arm and offered it to the great master. Huike later became Bodhidharma’s successor."
Agriculture will tour across Europe and the United States in the fall, both as a headliner and supporting Boris. Dates are down below.
