On January 24, Abel Tesfaye will release his new record Hurry Up Tomorrow under his moniker The Weeknd, marking an end to a massive trilogy as well as The Weeknd project as we know it.
Well, maybe. In an interview with Variety, Tesfaye explicitly stated he wants to "kill The Weeknd." This statement coincides with a series of promotional billboards with a vague message that "The end is near" fashioned according to his albums' different art styles.
But if you love the work of Tesfaye, don't fret. The artist plans to end his career as The Weeknd, but has clarified that he will continue his work as an artist. No details have been indulged quite yet in terms of a plan following Hurry Up Tomorrow, but he even suggested that The Weeknd could return in some capacity.
As paradoxical a statement as it might sound, Tesfaye clarifies that the decision stems from a feeling that his work under the pseudonym has run it's natural course. While he remains open to whatever opportunities might come up in the future, he's choosing to end the project on his own terms, making sure to not "overstay the party" despite a practically endless series of accolades and broken streaming records.
Hurry Up Tomorrow releases January 24.
