136-song North Carolina flood relief benefit compilation with contributions from MJ Lenderman, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, R.E.M., and many more, out now

In the aftermath of the unfortunate devastation caused by Hurricane Helene, dozens of musicians such as R.E.M., The War on Drugs, MJ Lenderman and Fleet Foxes, among many others, have united for Cardinals At The Window, a compilation album of previously unreleased recordings to benefit Western North Carolina flood relief.

There are tracks like Iron & Wine's cover of the Bee Gee’s “How Do You Mend a Broken Heart”, as well as Waxahatchee and Sluice, each covering a different song from Gillian Welch – who herself contributes a live recording of "Hashtag" with Dave Rawlings.

Cardinals At The Window was compiled by community organizer and musician Libby Rodenbough, New Commute founder David Walker, and journalist Grayson Haver Currin, with crucial help from Shirlette Ammons, Martin Anderson, Anna Morris, Cory Rayborn, Nick McGregor, and Rusty Sutton. Mastered and engineered by Sylvan Esso’s Nick Sanborn and singer-songwriter Alli Rogers. You can buy the expansive collection for $10 at Bandcamp.

Rodenbough had this to say on the project:

“There were just so many folks who, like us, had witnessed the destruction of these holy places from the outside and felt their hearts trying to break out of their chests ... It was instant, the way people signed on. They also feel what I feel, that these mountains are the cradle of some deep and ineffable magic.”

Other artists providing Cardinals At The Window with covers, demos, live recordings, and more include The Dead Tongues, King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard, Tim Heidecker, Yasmin Williams, Weirs, Floating Action, Helado Negro, Feist, William Tyler, Bonnie “Prince” Billy, and Jeff Tweedy.

100% of proceeds will be split evenly between Community Foundation of Western North Carolina, Rural Organizing and Resilience (ROAR), and BeLoved Asheville.
