Singer Donna Jean Godchaux has passed away at age 78, following a lengthy cancer battle. Godchaux's best-known work includes her tenure with The Grateful Dead in the 1970s and her backup vocals for acts like Elvis Presley.

In her Grateful Dead role, which she served from 1971 to 1975 alongside her first husband Keith, Godchaux appeared on albums including Terrapin Station and Wake of the Flood. In addition, Godchaux performed with Jerry Garcia's eponymous band, before forming one of her own in 2006.
Godchaux died in a Nashville, Tennessee hospice facility. A statement provided to Rolling Stone reads, in part, "She was a sweet and warmly beautiful spirit, and all those who knew her are united in loss."
