Noise pop and alt-rock pioneers, The Jesus and Mary Chain, coming through with their eighth full-length LP, staying active since the sudden release of a comeback studio album in 2017. A project I wasn't crazy about. However, these guys would be far from the first band to have a somewhat rough return after a long hiatus. But things don't really seem to be smoothing out on Glasgow Eyes.
The mixes on this thing are very mild, dry, and lifeless. The performances are stiff and leave a lot to be desired. The vocals veer between being forgettable or over the top to a fault. And the more abrasive elements of the band's sound are not really hitting in the digital age.
Through whatever means they're producing and recording this music, they're not really able to conjure the bestial sound of their classic records or even what little magic was there in their 90s stuff. I mean, there are a few songs that at their core, I think, are admirable, cheeky, fun, and well-written, but sonically, the execution could be a lot better across the board.
What do you think?
