Nine Vicious - SEDITION

Hi, everyone. Bigthony Buhtano here, the internet's busiest music nerd, and it's time for a review of this new Nine Vicious project, SEDITION.

Yes, SEDITION is the latest and, believe it or not, third full-length project this year from Georgia's own Nine Vicious. An artist whose roots go down into the hip-hop underground, in the rage and trap scene, but in the last few years, he has been garnering a level of attention that's really been kind of pulling him out of that space a little bit, which I think there are a lot of contributing factors there, recently teaming up with Young Thug's own YSL.

There are numerous controversies that he's been embroiled in over the years, lots of clout-chasing, attention-seeking behavior, including parading around the Israeli flag when he wants to just to kind of rub people the wrong way. Not to mention, of course, his very prolific output schedule, which SEDITION over here very much contributes to.

Look, ultimately, this guy has been making a lot of waves lately, given that this is his third project this year. I was kind of curious as to how it panned out, especially since recently he's become one of the most notable figures in the underground. But I was shocked to find not only that SEDITION just lacks pretty much anything that would make Nine Vicious special or interesting as even an underground artist, but the record even lacks anything of note that is good or enjoyable, even a little bit.

And I think a big part of that problem is Nine Vicious has really overestimated his abilities and range on this record, really kind of toning down a lot of the freakier, more distorted, more aggressive elements of his past music here, and favoring instead a lot of smoother, more autotune flows, breathable production with lots of synths and trap beats.

And in doing that, all that Nine Vicious has really managed to deliver on this project is a much, much, much, much, much shittier Young Thug album. Yes, really, from front to back, SEDITION, during every moment that it lasts, maybe except for a few tracks that sound like they are Lil Uzi Vert ripoffs, it just sounds like shitty Young Thug.

Pretty much everything he does on this record is in the spirit of Young Thug's legendary 2010s run, but he doesn't really have the musical intuition or talent to make any of it happen or come together.

The production choices on this thing suck. The trap beats are generic; they're thin, they have no flavor, nothing special or interesting about them, and the synth palettes are awful. Just really cheap-sounding trash for track after track after track. And even when there is maybe an interestingly placed or sourced sample, like in the case of the track "Casino" or "To Be Continued," it's like a complete waste of time and effort because Nine Vicious has absolutely nothing to offer vocally at any moment on this record.

And yeah, would you be surprised if I said he doesn't really have much to offer lyrically on this album either? The only lyrics on this thing that are worth mentioning are the ones that are so shitty they're mind-blowing: "I don't give a fuck about flags / I don't give a fuck about nothing / Hold up, I just fuck this Jewish bitch and a Palestinian just for fun / My bitch Democratic, she eat that dick just for fun."

That is a severe misunderstanding of what democracy is.

But look, I feel like these are issues I could slightly overlook if Nine Vicious had even a lick of rhythmic talent to anything that he was doing vocally.

I'm sorry, his flows are terrible. Nearly every good idea that he has flow-wise on this record feels borrowed from something else. And even the good ideas that he is just carbon-copying, repeating for track after track, he can't even seem to nail it down onto the beat in a way that it feels good in the moment to hear.

And even if he could manage to do that, there's also the ad-libs on this record. Usually, a great ad-lib on a given song will be unique to that song or will maybe, in some way, reflect the content of the lyricism or the track or kind of feed into a specific moment, rhythmically, to kind of enhance a line or transition to the next moment in the song, something.

But Nine Vicious's very low-effort dogshit approach to ad-libs on this record is just basically to be hooting and hollering, with no discernment of what he's rapping or singing on top of that. I'm not joking. For the duration of this record, pretty much all the ad-libs are Nine Vicious, wailing and screaming and sounding really freaky deaky like fuckin' Donnie from The Wild Thornberrys.

Just imagine young thug with maybe a tenth of his god-given talent, and then in the background you just hear "BAH WAH DAH WAH DAH BAH DAH." That is literally what the fuck the ad-libs sound like.

Ugh, God, what a horrid record. What a horrid, annoying, stupid album that I'm pretty sure, on some level, was designed by the CIA. I swear to God, this somehow has to be some kind of CIA plot to gaslight young people into thinking that in order to make underground music, it has to be mindless bullshit and dribble that means nothing.

And then you put this guy up on a platform, and then hopefully from there you get other kids copying him and trying to be just as stupid for attention. And look, I'm not trying to say that there aren't good and worthwhile and interesting artists and records dropping in the underground every year. Certainly there are. But one would presume that a functional scene that has a semblance of quality standards would not allow something this crummy, this boring, this lazy and uninteresting to float as high to the top as it is.

But I suppose in that regard, turds also float. So at least this album shares that in common with turds.

Again, there's literally nothing to listen to on this album that was not already done better on a Young Thug, on an Uzi Vert, on a Future album a million times over. Nine Vicious has no bars, no melodies, no memorable anything. He's annoying as hell; his beat choices are trash, his ad-libs are stupid. I felt insulted to have to sit through this excruciating torture chamber of an album. And nobody should waste any more time with this man's BS music.

I'm feeling a zero on this. A zero on this record. May God have mercy on your soul if you somehow enjoy this album. I hope you grow up soon. Thank you. Forever.
