“Lawrence Liquors” is  the second single to drop from Xiu Xiu’s ninth LP Angel Guts: Red Classroom, after the stellar “Stupid in the Dark” back in November. Despite working with a limited instrumental palette of only a drum kit and analog drum machines and synths, Xiu Xiu is in good shape of making a phenomenal (albeit belated) entry into the no-wave genre – this single proffering  a rattling drum machine sequence, buzzing synth intrusions, and a vocal from frontman Jamie Stewart that is as dynamic and manic as ever, which is particularly a joy to hear coming off his evenly whispered croon on last month’s Nina.
