KaraKara- Bully

Straight out of Dublin, Ireland, KaraKara is a producer specializing in instrumental hip hop beats with a prominent old school video game aesthetic. The artist took to his Bandcamp last weekend to release Bully, a collection of sixteen old and new tracks recorded in one sitting on his 22nd birthday, resulting in one flowing, continuous listen. Stream it above, and feel free to drop by his page to download it for a pay-what-you-want price.

Despite my mention of a video game aesthetic earlier, KaraKara doesn’t let the chiptune influence dominate. Rather, he incorporates a healthy dose of NES-inspired wizardry into a somewhat dubstep-infused brand of bass-heavy hip hop beats. KaraKara even utilizes samples that are at times absurdly obnoxious in their native context, but feel hilariously potent in his use (see: the Eiffel 65’s “Blue (Da Ba Dee)” in “No One Saw it Coming”). Bully ultimately succeeds on the strength of its unrelentingly engaging foundations and vibrantly playful attitude, tackling its one-hour length with admirable consistency.
