I hope you are doing well, and it's time for a Great Albums segment going over a bunch of records that I've enjoyed over the past month or so. And for this video, there's a lot. It's actually a very packed Great Album segment with some EPs, some shorter releases on the back end. So stick around because in my opinion, everything here is worth your time. Maybe there's a few you don't know. Let's see.

Jill Scott - To Whom This May Concern

And of course begin with the new Jill Scott album, To Whom This May Concern. Jill Scott, being one of the most forward-thinking singers and soul artists of her generation and beyond, has come back with her first album in quite a long time. And of course, per usual, this new collection of songs on this beefy record, because she seems to have been sitting on a bunch of this material for a while, brings together elements of hip-hop and soul and R&B as well as funk music and jazz. Highly enjoyable record with lots of focused songwriting, sensual grooves, amazing chemistry between her and her band; of course, stellar vocals too.

And frankly, for Jill Scott being as influential and as classic and as significant as an artist as she is, I am shocked to see the very low level of discourse around this album and just how good and consistent it is, especially with how much talk we've been seeing and argumentation we've been seeing around like soul music right now and neo-soul music vis-à-vis Jack Harlow's new record. Like, there should be two times as much conversation about how good this album is, and yet we're here. But anyways, please spend some time with this Jill Scott, and if you enjoy it, make some noise about it.

Gorillaz - The Mountain

Moving on next to, of course, you know it, you love it, I know I do, the new Gorillaz album, The Mountain. Definitely one of the band's most conceptual, narrative, personal, and emotional projects to date. Very much appreciate what Damon was able to pull off with, uh, the incredible list of collaborators that he had on this record in terms of the production, in terms of the lush and beautiful orchestrations, in terms of the tasteful ways in which he incorporated different elements of Hindustani music. Love what he was able to accomplish in terms of this record's reflections on spirituality, religion, existentialism, social commentary too. It is very much an experience type record, a dense and significant record from Gorillaz that I am getting a lot out of, especially on the best tracks.

GENA - The Pleasure is Yours

Let's of course also give a big shout out to the new GENA album, The Pleasure is Yours, another record that I feel like I haven't seen nearly as much conversation around as I should, because this new duo consisting of singer, producer, songwriter Liv.e and producer, drummer Karriem Riggins, really goes off. A chaotic, fun, entertaining mixtape-type flow across a series of tracks that embrace different elements of soul music and jazz and R&B, but in a very kind of futuristic, forward-thinking, psychedelic sense. Loads of charisma. Apparently also all original instrumentation too. If you like artists like J Dilla, if you like artists like Erykah Badu, you're gonna get a lot out of this album. It's all over the place. It's varied as hell. It is highly replayable. GENA, The Pleasure is Yours.

Bill Callahan - My Days of 58

Also been getting a lot out of this new Bill Callahan album, My Days of 58. Bill has obviously been at this songwriting thing on the indie circuit for decades and decades and decades now. And this record where he's reflecting on his process, his life, is one of his most profound and also funniest projects yet, with lots of winding linear jammy instrumentals that have kind of a psychedelic undertone to them that I didn't quite expect, at least expect to be as good as they are with Bill going in this direction. It really is like the best album he's put out in about a decade, if not one of his best records ever. But what can you say? Bill just has a lot to reflect on with this LP, and it's just a significant album.

James Blake - Trying Times

Following this, also been getting a lot out of the new James Blake album, Trying Times. James continues to prove he is one of the best producers out there, one of the best vocalists out there on the futuristic soul/art pop front. In a series of songs that are some of the most sing-songy and, I'll say, traditionally structured in terms of songwriting since his Friends That Break Your Heart record— like, this is obviously not as much an ambient or an immersive electronic experience in the way that Playing Robots Into Heaven was. This album is not only leaning heavily into ballads, but a lot of these songs center around the idea of maintaining love and human connection and just humanity in the midst of a very dark time in history and society. I've said this in my review, I will say it here, James essentially very thoughtfully and tastefully speaking to the times in the way that a lot of great artists do. This album is truly heaven-sent.

slayr - Half Blood (BloodLuxe)

Been enjoying the new deluxe edition of the slayr mixtape, Half Blood the (Blood Luxe) project. Slayr is an artist who is quickly proving himself to be one of the most creative, versatile, and interesting out there coming out of the underground scene at the moment. Not only do I feel like a lot of tracks on this record are pretty much exactly what rage music should be in terms of their energy, their hype, their catchiness, their explosivity, but slayr also incorporates a lot of melodic vocal elements and anthemic chord progressions into these tracks too that are not only pulling from a lot of emo trap from like 10 years ago, but pop punk and alternative rock music too. It's a very short, punchy, catchy, to-the-point record with some great energy. Everyone making fun of this kid for being himself is a complete loser. It's just encouraging to see someone breathing some life into this scene, frankly.

underscores - U

Of course, I also want to give a shout out to the new underscores album, U, which is handily one of the best pop records you could put your ears on this year. Not only does this record feel like a continuation of everything that made hyperpop so fun five years ago, but without being too on the nose about it. But it's also a very thoughtful record about a relationship that didn't quite get to full status, and the yearning and the angst of never quite getting to that point where that love was fulfilled. Just the obsession, the pining is unignorable on pretty much every track of this LP. Not to mention that underscores, like, really did make an effective transition here from like more of a rock and underground pop punky sound on the last record to something that is like really just going into full danceable clubby banger mode. So really enjoying this one.

Neurosis - An Undying Love for a Burning World

And finally, want to give a shout out to this big, massive beast of a record from Neurosis, An Undying Love for a Burning World. These atmospheric sludge metal titans and post-metal titans are back with their first album in 10 years after hitting a really dark rough patch with one of their members being formally dismissed, the band has returned, not just with a great record, but with Aaron Turner of Isis and Sumac fame. Yes, they've teamed up with another one of the best artists in the genres to make one of the most incredible records in this lane we have heard in years.

A record that not only reminds us of many of the sounds and elements that have always made Neurosis so good, but there are a lot of very linear, loud, noisy, experimental rock vibes on this record too, à la Swans. Which is most definitely an influence that both Neurosis and Turner share. And these ideas culminate into some really incredible lengthy songs on the back end of the record that are just mind-blowing and just really great immersive listens overall. So yeah, one of the best metal and loud rock releases you are going to hear this year for sure.

Now, this has been a big Great Albums video, so let me get into some EPs real quick for you.

Blood Command - Wet Death

One, the new Blood Command EP. This is one of the most fun metal EPs I think you could listen to this year. These guys are doing some crazy stuff. In terms of, you know, fusing some clean vocals and pop elements into their sound on a handful of tracks that are still very riffy, still very righteous, still very exciting and heavy like a good metal track should be.

Dylan Brady- Needle Guy

Also been enjoying this new Dylan Brady, Needle Guy EP. Seems like Dylan is on a little bit of a solo jaunt here. Don't know how long it's gonna last, but these slightly dubstep-influenced bops that he has here, especially with that title track, are very fun to listen to.

Cowboy Hunters - EPeepee

Also want to shout out Cowboy Hunters, one of my new favorite projects that I've caught in the UK as of late, bringing together elements of punk and noise rock and I would say rap music too, to a degree. These guys are bursting with eccentricity and creativity. It's some really fun stuff.

Model/Actriz - Swan Songs

And then finally, Model/Actriz, who we have sung the praises of for numerous times on this channel, have suddenly dropped an EP this week out of the blue with a few newly released tracks on it. And I think they're, they're quite good. Could be maybe just like some runoff from the Pirouette-era what have you, even if it is, the tracks are still quite good and I'm still glad they saw the light of day. If you're unfamiliar with Model/Actriz, if you're looking for some really dark, groovy, post-punky, gothy tunes that will get your hips moving while bringing a very kind of like unnerving, noisy, prickly, no-wave kind of energy, definitely give this EP and anything else they have done a listen.

And that is going to be it for this Great Albums video. Thank you guys very much for watching.

Anthony Fantano, Great Albums forever.

Radiohead turn 'KID A MNESIA' into a walkable fever dream

Thom Yorke and Stanley Donwood’s KID A-era artwork is assembled into a large-scale physical experience.

News

radiohead

Christian Potter

Radiohead are cracking open the KID A MNESIA universe again, as something you can physically step inside.

It starts in the desert. On April 10, at Coachella, the band will unveil a new installation buried inside a purpose-built bunker. After its festival debut, the project drifts outward to a short run of cities, Brooklyn, Chicago, Mexico City, San Francisco.

The installation in question is Motion Picture House: KID A MNESIA, a film-installation hybrid built from the bones of Kid A and Amnesiac. The visuals come straight from the uneasy minds of Thom Yorke and Stanley Donwood, the same artwork that once defined that era’s warped aesthetic, now blown up, reframed, and given room to breathe (or suffocate, depending on how you take it). The audio leans on the original multitracks, pulled apart and reassembled into something more atmospheric.

If you remember the 2021 digital experiment – part game, part fever dream – this is the next evolution. That earlier iteration let you wander through distorted hallways and impossible rooms, stitched together from album stems and spectral imagery. It felt unfinished in a deliberate way, like a sketch of a nightmare. Turns out, it kind of was. The plan had always been to build it in the real world; timing just got in the way.

Now, they’ve gone all in.

Yorke describes the internal logic of the piece as “a monster trapped in a derelict museum of the lost and forgotten,” which sounds about right if you’ve spent any time with these records.
According to Puck, the original version of the movie ended with the 1993 allegations against Jackson, when a family accused him of sexually abusing their 13-year-old son. But that ending was ultimately scrapped. Lawyers for the Michael Jackson Estate found a clause in a past settlement that prevents the accuser from being portrayed in a dramatized film. Once that came to light, the filmmakers had no choice but to rethink the entire third act.

That led to a significant round of reshoots. Variety reported that in June 2025, the cast spent 22 days filming new material, adding somewhere between $10 and $15 million to the budget. The estate covered those costs, since the issue came from their side. The release date was also pushed back, moving from April 2025 to April 2026.

The film’s ending now focuses on a different moment in Jackson’s life and his rise. Specifically, it will center on the Bad World Tour, his first solo tour and one of the biggest tours of its time. Instead of the allegations, the main source of tension shifts to his relationship with his father, Joe Jackson, who is played by Colman Domingo.

Jackson himself will be played by his nephew, Jaafar Jackson. With these changes, the film now leans more toward showing Jackson at the peak of his career, rather than ending on one of the most controversial chapters of his life.

Free jazz saxophonist Zoh Amba announces new album 'Eyes Full', a pivot to bluesy folk songs

US shows with Folk Bitch Trio and Courtney Barnett are on sale now.

News

zoh amba

Alan Pedder

Less than a year on from their avant-garde dazzler Sun, NYC-based free jazz saxophonist Zoh Amba is back with a new record deal at Matador and an unexpected pivot to a guitar-based singer/songwriter style with "Another Time," the lead track from their just-announced new album Eyes Full, coming June 5.

See Zoh Amba live

Returning Amba to their first instrument, Eyes Full is described as a character-driven record rooted in the day-to-day lives of working-class, small-town Americans. “I hope these songs touch people’s hearts,” they say in a press release. “They’re about people who really need to be seen and heard.”

Watch the video for "Another Time" below:

Eyes Full was recorded together with electric guitarist Kevin Hyland and drummer Jim White at Drop of Sun Studios in Asheville, North Carolina, not far from where Amba grew up in eastern Tennessee.

Eyes Full is out June 5. Today, the Iranian-American artist has shared one of the songs from that album, along with news that the full “unfinished record” is being released digitally and on cassette tape on May 10, with all proceeds being donated to the Red Crescent.

Listen to “Pavement” below:

Writing on Instagram earlier today, Mirzadegan says she is sharing the song “as an offering to anyone who may need it,” in light of Donald Trump’s recent, comic-book-villain-but-in-real-life threats against her ancestral homeland, adding:

“We are on the precipice of global catastrophe and I am a total wreck. I don’t know if I feel alive or dead or somewhere in between, but I do want to remind myself that I exist, that my people exist, and to hold hope for humanity somehow through it all. Keeping my palms open to receive and give care (or as my grandmother likes to remind me: “Begeer-o-bedeh” / بگیر و بده)”

"I hope you listen to this and it helps you see us as human. I hope you speak up before we’re all gone."

Read her full statement below:

Of course, a lot of Ye fans and ticket purchasers to the festival are unhappy and ticked off, and it leads to the question of what fairness and accountability looks like in the entertainment world right now.

Because while yes, it is true Ye has done a lot of work, I imagine, to stay stable over the last several months and Ye has put out at least a few apologies about the many statements and offensive music and a lot of stuff that he said over the past couple of years, he still did say and do all of that stuff, and people are still well within their right to be unhappy, especially since it hasn't even been a year out since he dropped "HH."

But really, for me at this point, it's not a matter of whether or not there should be accountability for what Ye has done and said. Absolutely there should. It's really more like when we're getting accountability and when we're not. Because honestly, it's kind of crazy that we're seeing an entire music festival just shuttered before we are seeing full investigations or a trial for any one of those named in, you know, the recent you-know-what files.

Angine de Poitrine - Vol. II

At least half of the jams on Vol. II seriously kick ass.

Album Reviews

angine de poitrine

7/10

microtonal

math rock

avant-prog

edited by dana

The Needle Drop

Beh beh! Hi everyone, Behthony Bethtano here, the Internet's busiest music nerd, and it's time for a review of this new Angine de Poitrine album Vol. II.

This is a brand new record from this Quebec, Canada rock duo, and there are few things that honestly I am more excited to talk about this month, mostly because the Poitrine takeover has truly begun, thanks to a recent KEXP performance and a few other live and interview clips from these guys, just going absolutely bonkers on the Internet, to the point where they are nearly inescapable.

Despite the fact that these guys are mostly an instrumental progressive and psych rock band, their appeal is proving to be much further and wider than your average artist in that field. Chalk it up to how well they play together, the music itself or, y'know, their visual gimmick. But for whatever reason, I see all the time, like, loads of normie teenagers dancing to numerous songs from these guys, certainly more than I'm seeing of them jammin' to BTS or, like, the recent Harry Styles. And I dunno, I think that's sayin' somethin'.

And as Vol. II here suggests, this is the second album from the duo following their 2024 debut, which I admittedly missed, though I think most people did. But going into this new record here, I was mostly interested in, in kind of gaging the hype and seeing how the music measured up. And I was also kind of wondering if a studio record from the duo would reveal another side of themselves, their sound, the weird little world-building exercise they seem to be engaged in, though it mostly seems to kind of exist just for them to stay anonymous.

But given that this record is seemingly independently released, and how quickly the duo dropped it following their kind of viral blowup here, it's highly likely this record here was already in the can or mostly, mostly done, and then they managed to blow up while getting out there and performing, promoting their music.

But actually sitting down and listening to the record, did it blow me away? No, not necessarily. But I do think what Poitrine does here is good enough to meet the moment and hopefully bring fans potentially into a space where they are being appreciated for their sound as much as they are their visuals and, you know, the papier-mâché costumes. In a way, what these guys are doing kind of reminds me of a lot of, like, weird and experimental rock and rock-adjacent duos and groups that sometimes were costumed or quite theatrical in their presentation that were all over the indie scene in the 2000s. Be it either a Lightning Bolt or The Locust, even Sunn O))) maybe to a degree, who just dropped an album. Oh, and I should mention Hella. Hella!

However, those acts are far, much more influenced by noise and experimental rock, straight up. Meanwhile, what Poitrine does on this project makes much more sense in a modern rock landscape that sees bands like Khruangbin essentially being kind of the, you know, modern instrumental rock rule of thumb, with of course King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard being every alt teenager's gateway into microtonal music.

So, as weird and as avant-garde as Angine de Poitrine looks on the surface, I actually think their music has a surprising amount of crossover appeal with a lot of touring, working music acts out there today. And if there is anything making them a tad bit different, it's their clear prog and math rock influences, which manifest not only in some pretty gnarly solos but also a lot of interesting grooves that are either oddly timed or segmented in some interesting and surprising ways across the lengthy and multi-phased songs on this album, which gives these tracks sense of variety but also familiarity, because it allows the duo to provide a lot of variation on a certain musical idea or lick or riff without having to compose totally different sections within each song every time.

So, you know, you kind of like bombard the listener with a series of twists on the same musical mode or melody, which is a strength and a weakness of this record, because while it does make the six jams on this record pretty hypnotic and immersive, sometimes the repetition can be a bit daunting, especially in the second half of the track "Sarniezz." Like, just because you're layering a bunch of different guitar lines on top of each other, that doesn't necessarily mean they're complementary or that they provide any interesting sort of interplay.

So yeah, sometimes the very basic overdubbed guitar layers and ultra-dry mixes on this record are not enough to keep this thing thrilling from start to finish. And in the grander scheme of things, given the way the band presents themselves and the discourse around their music, I was kinda hoping for something a little more out there. I mean, for sure, the playing is tight throughout this project, but come on. It's not like the Eastern Bloc and Turkish musical scales that are all over this album are like an altogether new thing, especially within modern underground rock music. Like, even the band Altın Gün has a new record out this year. I

n a lot of ways, while the music isn't bad, I do see Poitrine as pretty much doing a silly presentation to launder musical ideas that maybe more narrow-minded people people wouldn't necessarily be open to in other contexts. Like the song "Utzp," for example. It's basically a fucking polka that doesn't want you to think it's a polka. Think a song Gogol Bordello would drop back in the day, but with like a kind of a metal-influenced finish. Or any number of John Zorn records over the years, where he's kind of putting together elements of experimental rock, prog rock, and klezmer.

Don't take my aggravation and annoyance here as having anything specifically to do with the band or the music itself. It doesn't. It's just a little disheartening to find that the most truly distinct and recognizable thing about what these guys are doing is just how they're dressed.

Still, at least half of the songs on this record are very good and killer examples of these guys just jamming their nuts off. But as they push things forward, I guess my one wish for what they're doing is to find more ways to work elements of effects or color or texture into their work, as the moments on this LP where you do hear some, like, very weird and almost alien guitar tones, those are pretty entertaining. I also hope the next record could possibly sound a little bit more live. Them being a duo does allow them a lot of improvisational freedom, which I hope they kind of like take the lead with into the future. Like, they don't have to merely limit themselves to what a band of five guys sounds like, who have to sort of like play together in a sensible way in order for it to come across, I guess, legible.

Still, with all that being said, the intro track on here is great. "Utzp," that I mentioned earlier, that has the polka vibes, is definitely a highlight too. And then my third favorite being "Yor Zarad," which is maybe the most original sounding moment on the record. Not only does it feel like these guys are kind of pushing those Anatolian rock influences to a really freaky edge, but then also in the very last leg we have some very much Residents-type licks popping up with a jump-the-fuck-up metal finish. And as cool as that cross-section of sounds are, I would bet my two balls that most people finding out about this band on TikTok have not heard a Residents album all the way through.

Still, with that being said, though this is not their first album, I do think this record is a very good introduction to Angine de Poitrine, and I'm hoping now that they have gotten this huge amount of exposure with a successful album launch off the back of it, they can tour, get out there, show more people what they've got, and hopefully circle back around with a record that feels a little bit more full, less skeletal in terms of its sound, its layers, its influences. Which is why I'm feeling a light to decent 7 on this one.

Anthony Fantano, Vol II..
