I must ask, where did you get your specs?
Hey AF, I couldn’t agree with you more. Listened to the entire record yesterday at work and it’s pathetic what they’ve done! So bad!! Almost like every song sounds the same. “The Con” was something special! They have stepped away from what they use to be. 4.5/10: sad but true. A black eye to CanCon music.
I’m a hardcore T&S fan and I definitely am not supporting the direction Heartthrob’s taking. It’s definitely their worst album. However, I think there are a few good songs (as you mentioned, “How Come You Don’t Want Me” is probably the best). But I definitely don’t think it’s comparable to top-40 music in anything other than genre. The beats are by far more evolved and varied than the simplistic copy/paste rhythms you hear on pop radio (I’m honestly confused and disappointed as to why you’d think they were on par with Katy Perry); the lyrics, while not up to typical T&S caliber, are still emotionally inspired and genuine; and they still are able to churn out some of the best layered vocals in the music world. Unfortunately the “intelligent pop” thing rarely works for anybody. It either sounds like an incapable artist trying to be more than they’re worth, or, in this case, a capable artist who’s wasting their talents on mediocrity. It’s not an overall impressive album, but despite that, it still manages to be decent. If you don’t allow the poppiness to cloud your judgment, I’d say this album is 5- or 6-worthy.
This sounds nasty, but I am honestly so glad to hear negative feedback from fellow fans. I bought this album a couple of days ago, and I have to say I was actually shocked by what came out of the speakers. I couldn’t even finish listening to it. I’d prefer to pretend like this never happened. I guess I am one of those “old time fans the new album may alienate” that the reviews keep mentioning. SO MANY of the critics’ reviews for this album are purely positive, I feel like maybe I’m going crazy!
I seriously thought I was on crack talking to people about this album. Until I found this review! Everyone is saying how good it is and I keep thinking “Are we listening to the same thing!?” This album is so disappointing to me.
Couldn’t agree more. So disappointed with this album.
