Vilagers- “The Waves”

Indie folk outfit Villagers has a new single out titled “the Waves,” which features an extremely surprising change of direction for the band whose previous efforts were mostly humbling, sad, singer-songwriter tunes with baroque instrumentation and a Bright Eyes-esque personality.

This new track, though, features loads of electronics, louder instrumentation, and a pretty dissonant finish. It’s a climactic little tune that feels much longer than its five-minute length–mostly due to how well it builds tension throughout the track.

While not all reactions to this different sound have been incredibly positive, I, for one, am digging on it.

Look for Villagers on Domino Records.

This tune is excellent; I can really appreciate the shift in style. I caught it live at a festival outside Dublin and it was thrilling.
