M83- Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming

On M83′s latest album, indie dance and synth pop sounds are pumped up and glossed out until they reach almost unrealistic proportions. Not only that, but these ideas are stretched out to a double album length. WATCH THE REVIEW

I feel more or less the same about this one. Huge sound but essentially a bit shallow and, at times, boring. You really get fed up with the sound after a while. Works quite well as a car-by-night album though. And I actually like that frog-song.

Key tracks: Midnight City, Wait, My Tears Are Becoming A Sea, New Map.

    Good review, thanks!

So do you think you’ll review Lulu?

Fantano! When are you going to start reviewing music that acknowledges the shit that is going down in the streets. Occupy Oakland, Chicago, New York and the 1,397 other cities that are trying to overturn the system need theme songs. This buried in your parents basement shit have really reduced my visits to your site as of late. I don’t know if fresh revolutionary music even exists. If it does, please find some for us. Thanks! Ouch strong 4. Oh well I personally love this thing. I agree the narrations are so incredibly cheesy and yes the inevitable filler doesn’t do much for the albums cohesion but I still feel that this is M83′s most accomplished album. It’s no album of the year but its not bad either. Id give it a decent to strong 8. Next Review the new Real Estate album or Tom Waits’ new one.

Mr. Fantano. I came across your blog around September of this year. You were the source of inspiration for my own music blog for a course at school. I have been a fan ever since, and do make regular visits. Some of the artists you review are not my style of music, but had to find out your thoughts on M83. Everyone else in the biz is raving about the ambition of the project given it’s length and ‘larger than life’ sound. And I am very relieved to know that a credible musical nerd (like yourself) shares my viewpoints on the album. It’d be very mean to dismiss it as ‘meh;, but can’t worship it as the ‘ALBUM OF THE YEAR’. To me, Hurry Up We’re Dreaming reignites my distaste for cheesy synth-pop from the 80′s. For some reason, makes me want to look up old Duran Duran videos and just laugh. Although I understand the notion behind the ‘cheese’, (I guess to signify it’s all just a dream), there are several instances, be it through narration or excessive glossiness, I feel the nausea you feel when you know you’ve had too much cotton candy, and I mean too much! Agree with your rating. Songs that are IPod Worthy: Midnight City, Reunion

In my opinion track 6 of disc 1 (the story by the little girl) is about drugs… not literally about parental sex change :/ Personally I liked the song. Actually I just liked the narration, the track itself is meh.

  • Zarchasm

I like that frog song. It illustrates the imaginative genius of little kids and it portrays psychedelic drugs in a beautiful way. The rest of the album is filler, besides those key songs. The album overall – meh.

This could have gotten a strong 8 if it had been 1 album and not 2. Just saw them on Halloween and I liked everything that they did live because the played all of the songs different and left out all of the “talk songs”.

No, Anthony, noooooooooooooooo… I loved this album. Feeling last year we agreed more usually. I´m not in love of too many 2011 music, but really liked this record, man. OK, I know it´s just your opinion =D
