Sure, Kanye West and Jay-Z are notorious for their bragging skills. But when they’re together, those muscles get flexed harder and harder with every verse about luxury vacations and cars.

If painting themselves into this corner is going to be the only thing this collaboration offers, I’m not sure I’m going to be into the entire album, honestly. Will Watch the Throne be a little more dimensional?

What do you think of this track? Love it? Hate it? Why? Are you looking forward to Watch the Throne? What do you think the other tracks will have to offer?

lol facial joke. I’d agree that “Dark Fantasy” is a fantastic song.

  • Chris Havard

Well What do you want them to do, be conscious rappers or something? Rap about something meaningful? You’re just raining on the parade!

  • Ryen

Jerking you off, what’s with the hate toward hip-hop? Jay-Z is the epitome of braggadocio rapper and always has been, as is their segment of the genre (Lil’ Wayne, Nas, Game, etc all boast – some about violence, Kanye and Jay more about the money/girls). And the name of the album is Watch the Throne, a lyrical jab at the competition, so its fitting they come out firing. As far as the beat, I think it’s a simple but banging ass soul sample (what’s with the screaming at the end though?). That Otis Redding “feature” is just smooth as hell at the start. I hope the whole album isn’t dick measuring though, I’m sure they’ll have some Jesus Walks to balance out the Workout Plan.

  • Chris

    Lmao! Best review!

  • Abhishek

you should listen to reasonable doubt and late registration if you haven’t already, might change your perspective on both of them. yeah i agree the subject matter is overdone here.

lazy lyrics … mean beat … it sounds like a RZA beat
that HAM had alot of energy .. but lazy lyrics as well… :/

  • Mark

I’m guessing they had to include Otis Redding in the credits for copyright reasons. The song sounds horrible BTW

  • Kwasi

This has nothing to do with your track review, but how can you talk about Jay-Z’s bravado without mentioning “Reasonable Doubt”? Just wondering.

    “A punchline filled dick stroking contest…” lol….

  • http://owenperry.ca Owen

I wonder what they paid for that Otis Redding sample.

I honestly don’t know what’s worse; these two comparing dick sizes and desecrating the work of a truly gifted artist like Otis or Kanye left to his own devices and straining out a painful faux confessional turd like his 2010 lame epic Runnaway… they are equally banal and I hope this one goes away as fast as the other one ran away. — Lord Of The Starfields

Hate toward hip hp? Not liking this song is the equivalent to not liking hip hop at all? Not liking this song means I don’t like any rap where the rapper brags in a funny or clever way? Way off target, Ryen. Way off target.

I hope that in this album they have at least one record where they go back and forth like Jadakiss and Styles P or Hov and Biggie in “Brooklyn’s Finest”

    Earl Sweatshirt – EARL

Kanye West and Jay-Z, Watch the Throne, FOREVER.

I think this is a solid song that deserves a higher score than you gave it. I don’t believe that means you hate hip hop, but if I didn’t know what you were looking for in a song I could be mislead into believing you don’t have a full appreciation of the art form. A lot of your issues may have been technical, but in the end it sounds like you are just complaining because of the subject matter. This song is definitely a strong 7 from me. You also might want to raise the troll defense on the “you just hate hip hop” front; it seems like an easy button to press with you. Still a great review as usual. I love what you do.

Menndo, yeah I guess you’re right on the troll defense front. :-P

Jmaaan, it may have been. These guys have made a lotta records. I’m sure it’s not just something they overlooked, but that doesn’t mean I liked it. Sounds like Jay is swallowing the mic or something. *shrugs*
