What do you think of this track? Did you love it? Did you hate it? Why? Do you smoke weed on a daily basis? Weekly basis? If you do, do you think that makes this music appeal more to you? Less?

I never got into Weekend at Burnies, and in hindsight, I don’t feel that I’ve gotten much of enjoyment out of him after pilot talk I and about half of Pilot Talk II. The first one had more memorable tracks like Audio Dope II, Example and the awesome ode to chilling the eff out, “Breakfast”, with lyrical wordplay about trivial things such as playing xbox and smoking weed that would make any pretentious Talib Kweli-wannabe feel ashamed that he can’t even make social issues like race and war seem interesting. The second one wasn’t as memorable, but it had some real zoned out production and some awesome wordplay too. Lately, on tapes and this album, he feels kind of drained. There’s only so many references to weed you can make. And also, “Weekend At Burnies”?.. Even Cypress Hill knew when the weed-stick was getting ridiculous.

I think Weekend at Bernies was alright not his best work at all. I would have rather you checked out and reviewed his Covert Coupe project produced by Alchecmist.

I guess Curren$y is an acquired taste but I’m definitely a fan of his music and work ethic. The laid back low key feeling of his music is what draws me to it. He has an uncanny ear for beats, decent flow and wordplay and he’s very consistent.

yea i get wat ur saying bout this track an i havnt listend to the album yet homwever i think on the pilot talk lps the instrumentation wass really great and i dont see y u wodnt like him especially on those 2 lps from wat i think ur taste in rap is… on the first pilot tak the track audio dope II haand incredibly sick beat that just really grabs me,, the instrumentaion on the single from that same lp breakfast was really high classs and alsoo on a track like the hangover or chilled coughphee… i dont think his voice and how he delivers his rap is a problem at all on that lp because of the instrumentaion the beats and the featured artists as well; Snoop, Devin the Dood, Big K.R.I.T, MOs Def.. well idk ha i jst like curren$y and wod like if u were on the band wagon..

Like Sushigoat above, I really like Pilot Talk 1 and feel pretty lukewarm about the rest of Curren$y’s work. Which leads me to believe that I like Curren$y best when he is rhyming over Ski Beatz. Ski’s production is incredibly lush and reminds me of early 2000s Boom Bap, only with a southern twist. It’s the ideal compliment to Curren$y’s slow drawl.

Curren$y’s never gonna have the dynamic delivery of Lil Wayne, who can, and does, turn in great performances from a myriad of producers. However, when Curren$y raps over a beat that accentuates his slow delivery, it really highlights his fantastic wordplay, a calling card that allows him to stand out as one of the better rappers out there.

Covert Coup trumps this album by a couple of points.

really curren$y has one of the best beats, using live instrumentals. Hes on a serious roll, hes putting so many albums out this year. One of the most consistent rappers in the game. His music definitely for chillin in the summer.

covert coup is really worth reviewing, you’ll love alchemist’s production.

and pilot talk 1/2 has great production

I really like this track. It’s really chill and I like the groove. Perhaps, I am not as discerning about beats as the next guy. Curren$y definitely has my ear for the moment, but I do feel it’s time he steps his game up to the next level. If his next release is anything like Weekend at Burnies I could see myself starting to get bored. I remain optimistic.

Curren$y is more about quantity over quality. Both Pilot Talk albums were cool. Everything else by him sounds vapid and samey.

This was so, so much worse than the Big Sean track…bleh.

I facepalmed when you said that Curren$y isn’t really about the production — I’d say the production/beats is EXACTLY what most people listen to Curren$y for. That’s what made Pilot Talk so great.

It probably helps if you smoke (I don’t), but even if you don’t, Curren$y sounds great in your car. Roll around real slow listening to that, you might like him a bit more. Perfect riding music.

Pilot Talk > Weekend at Burnie’s > Pilot Talk II > Covert Coup, imo
Covert Coup starts off great, but gets boring after the first few tracks.

I agree to some extent with most people here– Weekend at Burnie’s is definitely one of Curren$y’s weaker modern efforts, but there are good tracks on it. “#jetsgo” and “She Don’t Want a Man” are both greater examples of tracks from this album… That said, this is the man’s second full-length release out of four planned, and he released a mixtape earlier in the year, and Pilot Talk I and II and other mixtapes the year before. The man’s prolific, so you’re bound to run into some not-as-amazing songs with him.

That said, I disagree with most about the first Pilot Talk being the better one. There are some instant classics on that album (“King Kong”), but II has a better flow to it. The beats are really enchanting, and like someone else mentioned, great for cruisin’ around.

I think Curren$y’s earlier release of the year, Covert Coup, is the most impressive thing he’s done yet. The beats are hypnotic, and the whole thing’s over in less than 30 minutes, there are some great guests (Freddie Gibbs, Big KRIT, Fiend), and Curren$y’s lyrics are on point (though they don’t really say much–guess you have to appreciate the lyrical jumping jacks over what he’s actually saying).

I also smoke weed, pretty frequently, and I’d have to say it attributes a little. Being a chronic weed smoker you don’t mind someone raps about smokin’ weed a lot, especially when you’re using wordplay like Curren$y is. And the beats sometimes cater to that listening state–I like Covert Coup a whole lot, because it’s very entrancing, but I could see some sober individual saying the beats are repetitive and go nowhere.

I love both of the Pilot Talk albums, but i agree with you on this track and album. Weekend at Burnie’s serves it purpose as being chilled out hip hop, same as the albums before it, but its nothing new. Maybe I relate to it less because i don’t smoke and that is the main focus, even more so than any other previous album. I really dislike the beats on Weekend at Burnie’s in comparison to Pilot Talk I and II. Album is a 6/10 as fairly strong fan. Listen through the Pilot Talks if you haven’t, they might change your mind.

Matthew, that’s something I should have mentioned, actually. The features on Pilot Talk I were WAY better than that he’s got going on II and this album.

  • Filip Rapovski

I was quite underwhelmed by Weekend at Burnie’s as well, I almost feel bad for not really caring about his music when he is pretty talented.

A little late, but i feel like Curren$y is one of the better rappers out right now. One thing i need to say is that he has a his own “language” if you must say. So some people that are not fans may be like what the fuck is he talking about. Smoking weed definitely helps but it not totally necessary to liking his music. To me he is one of the few artists that I can listen to an album from start to finish without getting distracted. Although I will say he does have better albums than this that you should of reviewed. And he actually says it himself, he’s just rapping about what he does in his day to day life.

Weekend at burnies is his 3rd best album hands down.
    1. Pilot Talk
    2. This Aint no mixtape
    3. Weekend at Burnies
    4. Pilot talk 2
    5. The Jet files
also songs like (you see it, money machine, still, #jetsgo, Get paid) is some of his best songs besides the ones on his mixtapes
