On Fucked Up’s new album, the band brings concept to the forefront for a group of songs that tell a dramatic tale of love and loss. It’s pretty, well, complicated.

As “epic” as this story is, what makes it grandiose also kinda kills it for me, too. These songs make use of punk’s trademark aggression and speed, but draws all the intensity out to a point where it no longer feels energetic, thrilling, cathartic, or any of the other things I look to this style of music for.

Which leads me to believe that it’s just not for me. Maybe some of the more melodic moments could have gone over better if the vocals displayed as much dynamics, but the recording, instrumentation, and message are all pretty good.

For any punk fan, love it or hate it, it’s at least worth a visit.

Hey Man! I’ve been following your YouTube stuff lately. I enjoyed them at first, but now it makes me feel sick. Now you’re hearing this from a music blogger. I have this feeling that maybe we should just stop talking and listen to the music instead. The way you explain the albums is very good indeed, but you’re sucking the joy out of them. I’m beginning to hate this feeling of rating albums. Giving a 6 or 7 to a band’s effort. Of course everyone is free to express their opinions. But I think we’re crossing our limits. And you’re not the only guy out there I have this thing against. I’ve also lost my appetite on writing useless lines on music. Sorry!

’bout time someone gave this the review it deserves. completely can’t see where all the praise of this is coming from. album is so exhausting, especially for hardcore/punk fans.

    Anthony,

Can you list those punk purist albums you showed? The first didn’t have a title. Thanks.

If that’s the way you feel Pedram, that’s the way you feel. I think you’re taking the scores too seriously, though. Personally, my scores are a personal reflection of my enjoyment. It’s not like a grade on a paper. I say constantly that my videos are my opinions and my opinions only. You don’t have to agree with me, and I’m not right.

I think you’re overreacting to the music blogosphere’s effort to promote different kinds of music, too. Do you know how much music there is out there right now? There’s too much to listen to in a lifetime being recorded and released this very month! Of course people are going to take it upon themselves to sift through it and talk about their favorites in a public forum! Why is that wrong? Everybody hates a blogger or a reviewer until a blogger or a reviewer turns them on to something they love.

If you’ve lost a passion for talking about music, what can I say? I haven’t, so I’m gonna keep kicking ass and shedding light on stuff I think deserves attention. I’d rather be writing “useless” lines on music than allowing the major labels and radio stations decide what’s worth hearing for us.

i’ve got a lot of the same problems with this album, and i haven’t made it to the end in one sitting yet. if i had the LP i would probably spin either side A or B individually, and leave it at that.

it’s an album more suited to listening in the car. lyrics become a non issue for the most part, and it’s kinda fun to drive around on a sunny day while this album climaxes all over the place. but it wears me down. i’d go strong 6
