Death Grips- Exmilitary

Death Grips’ first mixtape is a grim look at mankind’s worst personality traits:: greed, addiction, anger. And the beats are just as offensive as the screamed rap vocals–which only helps get the point across. It’s an energetic record. It’s an intense record. Sometimes it’s over the top, but I love it. A decent 8.
You give a hobo screaming at you about the torments of being a addict a decent 8. Don’t get me wrong, i liked some of the songs. I liked it to the point when a hobo screaming at you isn’t funny anymore (and since my town lacks hobo’s, it’s about the time the album takes.).

Culture Shock rocks me, Guillotine makes me want to try out the contraption of the same name (in the best of ways) and Lord of the Game made me swing my d*ck during a pokergame.

But after one round, the guillotine loses it romance, culture is not that shocking and i lost that pokergame. I would give it strong 5 for kicking me in the face, but leaving me to rot in an alley with nothing but a shocked visage. An album needs picking up after listening to once. This will be collecting dust after a single listen.

    This was actually pretty awesome…
… Why don’t you review the new Witch Mountain Lp South of Salem

by the way… My roommate gave me $4.50 in dimes and before I gave this a listen I bought 2 40oz.s and some bubblegum… it goes very well with the album.

Hah. Well, Kees, when you put it like that, you’re just making me feel bad. :-P You know, it’s not necessarily what this album says that makes it attractive. Sure the perspective of someone who is angry and filled with various addictions is one I think a lot of people could sing or rap about. I think what makes this album is HOW it talks about these things. This album is intense as fuck. Not only is in intense, but I love the sounds it drums up, which only keeps me coming back for more.

Now, I did say the album is kinda like hobo rap, yeah, but hobos are people, which brings me to the greater picture of this album. I did also say this album is about the ugliest and most primal desires mankind has to offer, and I did mean that–maybe even more than the hobo comments. I see this album as a critique on the human race in general. The character on this album is greedy, self-interested, and excessive.

I can’t stop listening, nor can I stop talking about this record. I do agree with you that there are similarities to ATR, at least from the records Burn Berlin and 60 Second Wipe Out.

Thanks again for the great review.

Probably this will enter on my F#CKING AWESOME ALBUMS of the year list.

at first listen i thought “what the fuck?” after a few more listens the album opens up to me and now, after my 7 or 8th listen I LOVE IT. Has that “come back and listen to me again” factor.
